On Monday night, the New Jersey Devils locked horns with the New York Rangers in the Hudson River rivalry. In this game, the Devils ran out as 5-1 winners with Jack Hughes collecting three points (two goals and one assist). However, one NHL analyst was not pleased with his actions against opposing goaltender Igor Shesterkin and slammed him.
The Rangers once again had a poor start and conceded two goals inside the opening eight minutes. With them 2-0 down, Hughes found himself on a one-on-one situation against Shesterkin.
The Devils forward tried to trick him using a one-handed breakaway move in an attempt to make it 3-0. Shesterkin was able to block away this effort from Hughes.
NHL analyst Steve Valiquette though was not impressed by this move from the 23-year-old center player. In his first-period assessment, he slammed the alternate captain of the Devils and called this move as “blatant disrespect” towards the Rangers goaltender.

These comments from Valiquette even left his co-analyst John Giannone stunned. He would ask the former Rangers star to ask for more of his reaction on this matter. Valiquette claimed that Hughes wanted to put on a fancy move and that it was more “Instagram hockey than intense hockey“.
Jack Hughes left confused by Steve Valiquette’s comments
Steve Valiquette’s damning assessment of Jack Hughes‘ actions against Igor Shesterkin left many people stunned. In the press conference after the game, Hughes was left confused when a media person asked him for his reaction to these comments.
The New Jersey Devils star was left stunned, quite literally. In the conference, he claimed that he did not even understand what the comments from the analyst meant.
“I don’t even know what that means.”

This performance from Hughes has seen him increase his season points tally to 33 (11 goals and 22 assists). He is now ranked 11th in the most points category for the season, level with 10th place Mitch Marner.
As for the Devils, this win improves their season record to 17-9-2, and sit one point above the Washington Capitals in first place. The Capitals though have played four games less than their division rivals.
