Ben Shelter with his favourite NHL player Connor McDavid
The Edmonton Oilers are famous for featuring a young hockey player, who joins the players on the ice during the anthem. But, something interesting happened during their game against the San Jose Sharks, when a special 5-year-old fan Ben Stelter completely stole the night despite a big Oilers’ win.
The kid was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was just four. Since then, Ben has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy and 40 radiotherapy sessions to remove it. However, in December last year, the same returned, so he will, unfortunately, undergo more rounds of radiotherapy.
A huge Oilers fan, Ben’s dream was always to meet the team’s centre and captain Connor McDavid. Dressed in an Oilers jersey and McDavid socks, the cute little boy’s dream came true as he skated to centre ice with his hero for the anthems.
Ben’s special night didn’t stop there as he further got to enjoy the game in which his team beat the Sharks 5-2. The Oilers went on to make it even more memorable as the boy joined the left winger Zach Hyman for the post-game media availability.

While thanking everyone who made the day so special for Ben, his father Mike Shelter wrote a heartfelt message on Twitter.
He tweeted: “What an amazing night! Thank you so much @scotiabank @brian_d_porter @ashifmawji @EdmontonOilers and everyone else that made the night so special for Ben and our family. We are so grateful for everything. Ben is on cloud nine and will never forget this night! Our hearts are full!
“It was such a good night and it just kept getting better and better. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure this night was special for Ben and made sure Ben felt like a celebrity. Thank you for everyone that was cheering Ben on the whole way, you all made it extra special”.
