In one of the most horrifying and tragic events in the sporting world, former NHLer Adam Johnson passed away while playing. He passed away while doing what he loved the most – skating forward and playing hockey. His “freak accident” with Matt Petgrave saw him suffer a severe injury to his throat. He later succumbed to his injury.

The sight of him holding his throat while skating away from the ice field with huge pounds of blood dropping has sent shivers down the spine of many. His family is left devasted by his tragic passing. As per reports, his father and his aunt were watching the live stream of the game from Minnesota when this happened.

His aunt Kari Johnson said she was watching the incident unfold before her eyes with her brother live. The shock and tension on their faces were clearly felt.

Following this incident, all the games across the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) were postponed. His team, the Nottingham Panthers would later release a statement regarding his death. Here is the club statement by the team released on Instagram regarding his passing

The events that unfolded on Saturday were something nobody would have imagined. A “freak accident” that took a life away from a family is something that cannot be overcome so easily. The family, loved ones, and those who knew Johnson are still trying to recover from what transpired during the game.

“I lost half of my heart today. Love you always Munch” Kari Johnson wrote on her Facebook while mourning his death. His girlfriend Ryan Wolfe shared an image of him and wrote “My sweet, sweet angel,” while remembering him in this tough time.

His former University coach Scott Sandelin would break down in tears while paying tribute to him. He would hail Johnson as a “talented” player and “special kid“. Check out the video regarding this below which is currently making rounds on X.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby joined in to mourn his death. The veteran NHLer labeled him as a “great guy” and claimed he was lost for words to describe the situation.

Following this incident, neckguards have been made mandatory for the protection of players. Could this move have come sooner? Questions have also been raised regarding Matt Petgrave, who has been mercilessly slammed on social media for his involvement. The Police are investigating the matter and hope to come to a concrete conclusion soon.
