Adam Johnson’s fiancee Ryan Wolfe was present in the arena as the horror unfolded in front of her eyes. The Nottingham Panthers forward got his throat slashed by Matt Petgrave on Saturday during a game against Sheffield Steelers. 

His fiancee, Ryan ran onto the ice as soon as the incident happened, while the other players formed a protective circle around Johnson to give them privacy. The medical team immediately rushed to help, but unfortunately, the 29-year-old passed away in hospital.

Johnson collapsed on the cold floor immediately after colliding with Matt Petgrave. While the investigation is still under process, fans and pundits are speculating whether the kick was intentional or not. Questions regarding player safety has been brought up by the fans and experts as the horror incident leaves its mark on NHL history.

Ryan Wolfe paid heartfelt tribute to his fiance Adam Johnson on her Instagram story. She noted how loved the forward was in his team and he will forever remain in everyone’s heart. She also shared an image of his jersey as his former hockey team, the Ontario Reign honored him.

Adam Johnson, 29, becoming a victim of a “freak accident” has raised several questions regarding player safety. The league have now hinted at the use of protective neck gear to avoid such bloodcurdling accidents in the future.

Columbus Blue Jackets coach Pascal Vincent raised his voice, asking players to don protective gear prior to going on ice to avoid tragic deaths like this.  Following the wake of Johnson’s tragedy, Vincent questioned, “What’s the cost?”

"I mean, you have two eyes. A neck is a very dangerous area…I don't know what the cost is. I mean, are we more, we're males and we're strong and we have a lot of testosterones and we want to show it to the world. Yeah. Okay. But what's the cost?”

Unlike Ryan Wolfe who was present on scene during the accident, Adam Johnson’s parents witnessed the whole incident on screen. The organization, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, sent their condolences while talking about how Johnson was both on and off the ice.

This accident will surely prove to be a pivotal point in NHL safety rule changes as no one wishes to witness another such incident unfold. Further details on the incident will be shared after the investigation is completed.
