Alex DeBrincat’s Gordie Howe hat trick leads Red Wings to 5-4 OT triumph over Predators

Scoring a hat trick in any sport is considered a great feat. A hat trick of goals or assists signals that a player had a great game. In NHL there is one normal hat trick and one Gordie Howe hat trick.

Named after Hall of Fame, Gordie Howe, a player is said to have accomplished this when they scored a goal, registered an assist, and picked up a fight in the same game. DeBrincat who already recorded a hat trick earlier this season against the Calgary Flames, this time registered a different form of hat trick as he met all the criteria required to complete that feat.

In a topsy-turvy game that saw both sides exchange heavy blows, the Red Wings found themselves 3-2 down. Following his fight with Roman Josi, DeBrincat felt energized and scored the leveler to make it 3-3 in the third period.

Moments later, the Red Wings forward completed the rare hat trick as he assisted Jake Walman for his second goal of the day. This saw the hosts take a 4-3 lead. However, they were unable to hold on to it and had to dig deep in over time.

DeBrincat then assisted Lucas Raymond for the overtime winner with just 2:47 seconds left to play in the game. This victory ended a two-game losing run for the Red Wings. For DeBrincat it turned out to be a historic night as he completed a rare feat in the NHL, leading his team to a 17-15-4 record. They will now look to close out the year in top fashion as they take on the Boston Bruins on New Year’s Eve.
