“He’s playing in our top 6” – Alex DeBrincat traded to Senators by Blackhawks for No. 7 pick in 2022 Draft

American ice hockey right winger Alex DeBrincat was able to check all the boxes the Ottawa Senators were looking for in a player. As a result, the latter has determined the price to acquire the 24-year-old forward from the Chicago Blackhawks and offer him the contract of an undisclosed amount.
The Michigan native DeBrincat was traded by the Blackhawks to the Senators on Thursday ahead of the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft at Bell Centre for three draft picks — Ottawa’s first- and second-round picks in the 2022 draft (Nos. 7 and 39) and a third-round pick in the 2024 draft.
“The ability to add someone who is a consistent goal-scorer, someone whose age fits in with a lot of our core, someone that is a competitor, someone who has a proven track record,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said 45 minutes before the draft began, as quoted by NHL.com. “We’ve said since the end of the year that we were looking for someone who could play in our top 6 and he’s playing in our top 6.”

“We can control DeBrincat for two years”
DeBrincat, who had 78 points in 82 games this season, has one season remaining on a three-year, $19.2 million contract (average annual value of $6.4 million) he signed on October 3, 2019, before he can become a restricted free agent. The youngster has amassed 307 points (160 goals, 147 assists) in 368 regular-season games and six points (two goals, four assists) in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games.
“We can control him for two years,” Dorion said. “Obviously, we would like to extend him at some point in time but you’ve got to make sure the fit is all right. He was pretty excited. He’s played five years in the League and I think right now there was a bit of a shock for him, but once July 13 passes we can start talking with his representative and we’ll do that.”
