The Washington Capitals successfully held off Vancouver Canucks win on Monday, as captain Alex Ovechkin recorded 4 points including the first 2 goals of the season. The match took place at Capital One Arena where the team rallied for a 6-4 win against the “Nucks”.
The match didn’t only deliver a win for the team but also pushed Ovechkin’s record closer to the NHL legend Gordie Howe. Howe stands with 801 goals while Ovechkin chased up to 782, just 20 goals before crossing the record as NHL’s 2nd in history.
Alex Ovechkin commented, “Obviously, previous games pretty good chances, but even today you know first one was kind of luck, but in this situation you kind of take it and move on.” Ovechkin’s tip-off to Conor Sheary gave the team a 5-4 lead in the third period.

Apart from him, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dylan Strome, and John Carlson each had their own assists and goals for the Capitals, as they entered the third period. Coach Peter Laviolette said, “I thought in the third period we straightened out and played a really good third period — maybe our best third period of the year and our best offensive period of the year”.
“We were on the attack, and we were pushing the whole time.” Canucks coach who was excited about his 600th team win was left disappointed after the final period. Later during an interview, coach Bruce Boudreau stated, “When you’re on a roll, you’re waiting for good things to happen. When you’re in something like this, you’re waiting for something bad to happen.”
Canucks captain Bo Horvat commented, “That’s three games in a row now that we’ve had leads and outplayed teams and it’s just unacceptable by us, it’s unacceptable by myself and my leadership”.
“I hold myself accountable, I’ve got to be better. Luckily, we play [Tuesday] night (at the Columbus Blue Jackets), so we’ve got to have a short-term memory and go out there and do it.”
Every Caps fan will now be on the lookout for Ovechkin, as he breaks through the gate of Howe’s circle.his powerplay within 56 seconds of the first period earned him the score of 1-0. The team’s optimistic about their next match and hopes for a comeback soon.
