“Hope he’s fine” – Alex Ovechkin leaves Capitals with injury and lose to Maple Leafs in a shootout

Alex Ovechkin, Washington’s captain leaves in the third period of a 4-3 shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Capital One Arena on Sunday. Ovechkin injures his upper body after crashing with the boards. With the NHL playoffs starting next week, Ovechkin’s injury puts pressure on the team. 

It was an accidental trip by Toronto’s goaltender Erik Kallgren while charging for a clear breakaway 1:58 during the third period. His left arm is severely injured after crashing into the end of the boards. Ovechkin was down until the play was stopped at 2:03. After his return to the locker room, he failed to return. Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said after the game,

“I haven’t talked to the trainer yet, so we’ll get an evaluation on him.”

Alex Ovechkin has participated in 77 of the Capitals’ 79 games this season. His crash during Sunday’s game called for no penalty. Toronto’s goaltender Erik Kallgren said,

“I think he skated into my stick and tripped on it. So it was not my intention to trip him and I hope he’s well”. “… Obviously, he was frustrated. I didn’t mean to trip him. I didn’t mean to cause an injury so I hope he’s fine.”

Washington Capitals forward, T.J. Oshie noted,

“I’ve never met anyone tougher than that guy”. “We all hope he’s fine. I just talked to him and I think he’ll be all right. It’s always scary seeing ‘Big 8’ go down and lay on the ice. He’s a tough guy. But if there was anyone I would imagine wouldn’t miss any more time than he needs to, it’d be 8.”

Alex Ovechkin has played in 1,724 of 1,318 games for the Capitals since stepping foot in the NHL in 2005, as noted on nhl.com.
