At the start of the 2023-24 NHL season, several fans had their eyes set on Alex Ovechkin. The Washington Capitals captain was closing down on the most goals scored record of the legendary Wayne Gretzky. Things though have not worked out as per his plans and the Russian forward now finds himself on a 14-game goal drought.
Ovechkin also called “The Great Eight” is going through one of the worst slumps of his career. The 38-year-old has only scored five times this season in 28 games. However, he is confident about ending this goal drought soon and getting back into form.
Ovechkin is currently 67 goals behind Gretzky on the all-time scoring list. “The Great One” scored a grand total of 894 in his impressive career. For long this record seemed unsurpassable. However, things changed when the Capitals forward scored his 801st and 802nd goals around this time last year. He went on to finish the season with 42 goals across his name.
So what could be the reason behind this sudden decline in form? Is his age catching up to him? The Russian international does not have an answer himself and is as confused as many NHL fans and experts.
I don’t know. Some luck. I have chances, I have pretty good chances, but sometimes it’s just a period of maybe you hold the stick too tight because you didn’t score or something... Sooner or later it’s going to happen, and everything is going to go in.Alex Ovechkin on his goal-scoring drought through NHL.com.
Alex Ovechkin trying to help team in different ways during scoring slump
Since the start of the season, the Washington Capitals have had a hard time in struggling goals. Injuries and going out of form of players have all contributed to this downfall. As Alex Ovechkin continues to struggle to find the back of the net, he is now trying to help out his team in different ways.
While he is mostly known for his goal-scoring prowess, the forward is also known for his leadership skills and assists. An inspirational figure in the locker room, his presence alone there can settle down the nerves of players. As for assisting others, the future Hall of Famer is not shy of helping others score goals and boost their confidence.
It's frustration for me, I think frustration for everybody... If I don't score goals then I have to do some different things to help the team to win, and I think everybody in this time right now knows who we are and who we have to play.Alex Ovechkin on his goal-scoring drought through NHL.com
Following this, Ovechkin went to assist Dylan Storme‘s overtime winner against the New York Islanders. This assist from Ovechkin saw him tie Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin for the second-most OT points in NHL history with 39 points.
When Ovechkin scores next remains to be seen. However, one goal from him could change the entire landscape and get him going again. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping this comes soon for him and he gets back to his goal-scoring form as the season progresses.
