Another brawl sparked up in an ugly and vicious ending in Game 4 between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers. Knights’ defenseman Alex Pietrangelo intentionally tried to hurt Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl. He slashed the wrist of his opponent and broke his own hockey stick in the process. This action by Pietrangelo has seen him receive a one-game ban from the NHL.
The incident occurred on Wednesday as the two teams locked horns for the fourth time in the second-round series. With the game coming near its conclusion, Pietrangelo could not control himself. Draisaitl had an empty net to score with barely a minute left to play. After the shot, the frustrated defenseman reached him and gave up a two-handed slash.
Following this incident, he was slapped with a one-game suspension for misconduct. The NHL also placed a one-game ban on Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse, who was found to start a fight with Nicolas Hague near the end. Both teams will now play Game 5 without these two players as they serve their suspension.
NHL Twitter fumes as Alex Pietrangelo receives a one-game suspension
This second-round series between the Knights and Oilers have packed a few punches. Emotions have been on an all-time high as these two teams clash against each other to book their place in the final four. A similar brawl broke out in Game 2 between them. The Knights, who won Game 1, were demolished in the second encounter. A heated argument between Brett Howden and Brett Kulak soon became a major fight as players from both sides got involved.
There is no denying that the actions by Alex Pietrangelo on Leon Draisaitl were fair and righteous. He already knew the consequences he would have if he took matters into his own hands. His penalty of one-game suspension has, however, not gone down well with the fans on social media as they hoped for much strict action, Here are some reactions from Twitter.
With the series now level at 2-2, the drama is likely to increase in the next games. A key reason for his only being a one-game suspension is Pietrangelo’s previous records. This was the first time in his fifteen-year career that he has received a fine or suspended. Perhaps first-time lucky or should he have given a more strict punishment is up for the debates of experts.
