Andrew Cogliano's speech motivated the Avalanche players
Canadian ice hockey forward Andrew Cogliano signed a one-year contract (financials not disclosed) with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Cogliano could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 13.
The 35-year-old had 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 74 regular-season games for Colorado and the San Jose Sharks this NHL season. This even included an assist in 18 games after he was acquired in a trade with the Sharks on March 21.
“I’ve been in the League for a long time,” Cogliano said, as quoted byย NHL.com. “You have thoughts, you have things that go through your head, but I really felt after us winning (the Cup) and me playing on the team and me being a part of the group and seeing what the Avalanche are all about, I just found another level of intensity, I found another level of motivation that I was excited to push again.”

“Really want feeling of going into a season as winning team”ย

The Ontario native Cogliano had six points (three goals, three assists) in as many as 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Avalanche lift the Stanley Cup trophy for the first time since 2001. He was fourth on the team (second among forwards) with 2:07 shorthanded ice time per game in the postseason.ย
He added: “I thought it was one of the most enjoyable experiences, enjoyable moments and three months of hockey that I’ve played in a long time, if not the most enjoyable. So, all those factoring in, I thought to myself, you have a chance to return and go into a season as a team that’s won. That’s something, I really wanted that feeling.”
