“The first building block” – Arizona Coyotes set to introduce Street Hockey League for kids

The requirement for participation in the Arizona Coyotes Street Hockey League is very simple – interest. Interest is all you need for starting this adventurous journey, no prior experience is required. The hockey league is open for kids between the ages of 7-13.  Street hockey is something that the Coyotes have been interested in for a long time, and now it’s finally turn to set things up in the gym.

Coyotes, senior director of Hockey Development, Lyndsey Fry noted that there has always been an interest from the students whenever the teams held clinics at schools. Looking at their enthusiasm, the club was more or less convinced and compiled to set up one of the first-ever Street Hockey Leagues for the kids in The Valley.

The club announced that the Coyotes Street Hockey League will officially kick off on Saturday, 17th September, at Burk Elementary School in Gilbert. It’s a 10-week program offering 45 minutes of skill building, followed by 1 hour of gameplay. They further stated that the cost for the program will be more or less $49.

Fry noted, “We felt like there was just this feeling from kids of, ‘I had a great day at P.E. today,’ but then that’s it, and then their connection to hockey kind of fizzles out until they do P.E. the next year”. “We thought creating a league was the natural next step.” “This is very new for the Arizona markets to actually start up these leagues”.

She further said, “Eventually we’d like to have a robust ecosystem of street hockey programming — and street hockey leagues — where we could do some sort of big tournament, which is a goal we’ve always had.” “This is the first building block of actually getting us to that point.”

Fry said that she’s optimistic about this approach and that the league has enough potential to grow throughout the metro Phoenix area, ultimately covering a wider range. It had to be started from somewhere, and this is that point. The Coyotes co-ordinator of Hispanic Hockey Development, Jonah Rodriguez stated that the kids are very excited about this program, and he has been visiting schools throughout the year to teach them the basics of it.

Fry lastly noted, “Hockey is the only sport that resembles life in the sense that, when you get knocked down in other sports, the whistle blows and the play ends,”. “In hockey, you get knocked down, the play keeps going and you’ve got to get back up. I think that’s one of the things I really try to encourage in kids who are playing roller or ice hockey, is that idea, to get back up.” “I think the biggest thing is just the bond you create with your teammates. “I think if you’re unsure, get out there, try it out, and it’ll be a safe, fun, and inclusive environment.”
