Colorado Avalanche skipper Gabriel Landeskog is unlikely to face supplemental discipline for his high hit on Edmonton Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto on Thursday, as reported by TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. For those who missed out, this incident took place during Game 2 of the National Hockey League (NHL) Conference Finals between the two teams at Ball Arena.

The hit by Landeskog forced the Oilers winger to exit the game with an upper-body injury in the second period. The latter did not return in his team’s 0-5 loss while the Swedish ice hockey player was not penalized on the play.

“(Department of Player Safety) looks at everything, but I doubt Landeskog’s hit on Yamamoto invites discipline,” Dreger wrote on Twitter, as quoted by TSN.com. “Landeskog appears to go through Yamamoto’s shoulder which makes the head contact unavoidable. The size difference is also a factor here, but it’s easy to understand why the Oilers would be upset.”

Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft has made his feelings clear about this incident after the game against the Avs. “I thought the player was in a vulnerable position,” Woodcroft said after his team’s defeat.

“I thought the angle of the check, the principal point of contact was the head. It’s not my call. I don’t referee the games. I’ve said this ad nauseum and in the playoffs. My job is to coach and not to make the calls. I’m sure the necessary people at the league will look at that hit.”

Yamamoto, 23, set a career-high with 20 goals and 41 points this season. The youngster has a couple of goals and seven points in 14 playoff games.
