Coach Barry Trotz is currently taking a break from NHL after getting fired by the New York Islanders on May 9. He has an impressive history of coaching. To date, Trotz has coached 2nd most NHL games in history, just behind Scotty Bowman.

With the Islanders, Nashville Predators, and Washington Capitals, he has achieved a score of 914-670-168 with 60 ties in 1,812 regular-season games in over 23 seasons with the teams. Before getting fired, he coached the Islanders for four seasons.

Recently he expressed his interest in coaching the Original 6 team. Though he has no interest in stepping into NHL right now, he will be glad to take an opportunity like this if it ever arises. The Original Six team is one of the most iconic franchises in the sport.

On Tuesday, Trotz expressed his desire, “Original Six, for me, I have never coached an Original Six team,”. “That would intrigue me … those teams always intrigue you. But the Canadian teams, you’re under the microscope. You sort of are in New York, too.”

“I think it takes a special coach, special player, to play in Canada because there’s a different pressure.” In the podcast “Cam and Strick” he stated that this team idea has sparked his interest. The Original 6 consists of – Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks.

This year on June 24, Trotz stated that he didn’t want to go into the coaching stream even though he had a potential chance to join the Bruins. The firing incident by the Islanders shocked not only him but as well as the insiders. The Jack Adams Award winner reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 14 of his 23 NHL seasons as a coach. He won the Cup with the Capitals in 2018.

As for his decision, he stated, “I think No. 1 is, I’m not quite there”. “I think probably to get everything settled, I’m going to be into early December before I feel comfortable (that) I’ve got family stuff in control and after that, I’m probably going to have to take a little break, a week or two, to maybe go somewhere warm in the winter, and then after that …”
