“Date circled on the calender months ago” – Bruins Brad Marchand makes season debut 5-1 win against Red Wings
Brad Marchand
Just a day earlier the Boston Bruins stated that they weren’t sure about forward Brad Marchand’s return on ice. Things took a sudden turn as the team introduced the 34-year-old to the team lineup against the Detroit Red Wings at TD Garden on Thursday.
Marchand’s season debut resulted in him scoring 2 goals and 1 assist after undergoing both sides of hip arthroscopy and labral repair on May 27. He enjoyed an ice time of 17:31 while having 4 shots. Before his debut, he had a strong morning regime with linemates Patrice Bergeron and Jake DeBrusk.
Marchand stated, “We had this date circled on the calendar months ago”. “You know, we obviously wanted to keep it kind of close because a lot of different variables about things that could happen or how I was going to feel…
“….we weren’t quite sure, but we kind of checked the box all along, each step that we took and the progression. I felt good, and I responded really well, and I got to give a ton of credit to the training staff, they did a phenomenal job.”

Brad Marchand thanks the team for giving him the necessary recovery time
When asked why Bruins coach Jim Montgomery didn’t announce his early debut date, he commented, “I was a little coy yesterday because we didn’t want to get ahead of ourselves”.
“We wanted to see how he responded to a good, hard practice. I’m excited to coach him and see the energy and the work ethic that he’s going to bring to the Bruins tonight.”
Marchand will not be playing against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, as the team wants him to get some more rest before resuming traveling. His debut and the team’s win lifted his spirits up, as the forward mentioned, “It’s great to get back into a game like this where the team has success, and it’s just so nice to be part of it again”.
Montgomery said, “I thought he was a world class player”. “Coaching with him today confirmed he’s a world class player. It’s amazing how he comes up with pucks. The puck is in between three bodies, and he’s like a little … Tasmanian devil.
“He’s twirling all around. The puck just seems to follow him. It’s amazing, it is. But he tracks it, he fights for it. But you’re all for it. That’s why you love him.” Marchand further stated how the Bruins’ winning streak has made it possible for him to take time and get better.
The team has been rolling even without Marchand and top defenceman Charlie McAvoy who underwent a left shoulder arthroscopic stabilization procedure on June 3. The forward stated, “It’s tough to sit out, but it definitely made it easier with the guys winning, so I obviously got to thank them for doing that”.
