The 2023–24 NHL season continues to create excitement and drama. Where some teams are flying high, there are some who are having trouble getting their season started. One of the strugglers this year has been the Ottawa Senators. The problems for them seem to grow even bigger following the comments of their captain, Brady Tkachuk.

On Saturday night, the Sens suffered their sixth loss of the season as they lost 6-4 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. As a result of this, they have now suffered defeats in five of their last six games. Following this loss, the Sens were booed heavily by their fans from the stands. This now seems to have ticked off their captain, who criticized them for their behavior.

Fans at the CTC Stadium were unimpressed by the play that unfolded before their eyes. Tkachuk claimed that he understood their anger, but he himself is frustrated with their performance this year.

t's frustrating. The negativity from the outside, the constant and the b******t, kind of, from the crowd too tonight was... I understand that they're a passionate fan base. I understand, I love it. But I mean, when you face adversity, you don't turn your back on the guys out there.

Senators fans call out coach D.J. Smith over poor performances this season

The words used by Brady Tkachuk have stunned the world. The 24-year-old, though, has been one of their best players this season and perhaps lost his cool because of the atmosphere before the game. The fans at the CTC started chanting “Fire D.J.” against their coach, D.J. Smith, for their poor performances this season.

Apart from the results on the field, the Sens are dealing with issues off the field as well. The suspension of Shane Pinto, along with the punishment they suffered for the trade deal with Evgenii Dadanov, have highlighted their season. All of this saw the fans lose their patience, and they made their voices clear against their coach.

Check out the tweet shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) regarding this incident:

The chants were loud and echoed across the entire arena. Their loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning does not make it easier for Smith and his team. Whether the wishes of the fans will be fulfilled by their new owners remains to be seen. Given the state of the team, Michael Andlauer may act quickly if he feels the necessity for it.

At the moment, the Sens are at the bottom of their division with eight points from eleven games. Their next task sees them take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena.
