“Wanted to be top-five player in league” – Brennan Othmann targets to play pro hockey with Rangers
Brennan Othmann
The 19-year-old forward, Brennan Othmann accomplished what he set out to do last season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), “I wanted to be a top-five player in the league and I think I established that”. The New York Rangers prospect was selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft. This year he couldn’t play in the American Hockey League (AHL) due to age restrictions.
It strictly meant that he needs to be in the Rangers opening night roster or he’ll be back to playing at OHL again. As Flint’s captain last season he scored 97 points in 50 goals and 47 assists in 66 games and 24 points with 9 goals and 15 assists in 19 playoff games. The 6-ft forward said that he tried to model his plays after Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk who has the same height as him.

Brennan Othmann is excited to be part of the New York Rangers
Othmann firmly believes he’s ready to turn pro with the Rangers as he said, “The NHL is a big step”. “Obviously, playing for the Rangers is a big step. They’re a good, young team with veteran leadership. If I can come here, learn, get a few games in, and stay as long as I possibly can, I think that would be great for my development and I think it’d be great for everybody. If I don’t end up making the team this coming September, then there’s always next year. Hopefully, it’s this year and I feel like I can do it.”
As noted on nhl.com, Rangers general manager Chris Dury said, “I’m glad that’s what his goal is, he obviously had a heck of a year last year”. “He’s a big-time goal-scorer. He had a really good year putting the puck in the net. He’s got a little bit of an edge to his game too. He’s a feisty kid. He’s very competitive. There’s a lot of things we like all over the ice.” It will be great if he can bring out his last year’s playstyle during the camp.

It will be a win situation for the Rangers if Othmann improves his playstyle even more like his role models, Tkachuk and Kyle Connor. Rangers director of player development Jed Ortmeyer noted, “He’s a high-end talent, thinks the game well”. “He’s got a great shot. He can score goals. He competes. We’re really excited about him. He’s highly motivated. He wants to be the best that he can be whether it’s there (in the OHL) or for the New York Rangers. We’ll take it one step at a time and see where he fits.”
