The Boston Bruins and the Pittsburg Penguins seem to remember the quote, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. After appearing at Fenway Park both the NHL teams donned vintage baseball jersey’s honoring the baseball teams that left their mark on the stadium.

Entering a legendary stadium deserves the etiquette that players should dress the part before wearing their own team jerseys. The Bruins and Penguins took things a step far though. They held baseball bats while Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry donned a catcher’s gear.

From an NHL netminder, he transformed himself into a puck ‘catcher’, as captioned on the Pittsburg Penguins social media account. Geared up with baseball gloves and uniforms handed down to them by Red Sox clubhouse attendant Tommy McLaughlin, they were ready to enter Fenway Park.

The gear that Tommy gave to the team belonged to the Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, who also participated in the opening ceremony on Monday. Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron and forward Brad Marchand held bats with style.

Red Sox utility man Kike Hernandez commented, “They look very legit”. “I’m hoping we get uniforms like that and do some sort of throwback. Those uniforms were really cool for sure.” While the Bruins’ uniform rocked, the Penguins didn’t just sit back. They gave a 1925 throwback to Pittsburg Pirates by donning their uniform.

As both teams arrived with vintage baseball jerseys, the question arose if the teams had discussed things previously. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan replied, “We did not coordinate with the Bruins, at least it’s not my understanding that we did”.

“I think it’s really appropriate, and in an event like this, in such an iconic stadium, in a lot of ways I think it’s appropriate because it gives us an opportunity to tip our hat to all the great players and great teams that have played in this stadium over the years. And for me, I think it’s just part of the entertainment value, but I know our players were excited about it, and I’m sure Boston was as well.”

The match between the Penguins and the Bruins ended with the Bruins’ 2-1 win. It was a classic event not only because of the team’s matchup, but as it is 110 years home to Red Sox and the 2nd time where the Winter Classic was held.
