Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar has been cleared to return to the ice. He underwent the league’s 2nd-time concussion protocol prior to making his decision. The Avs star crashed on the ice, hitting his head within an 11-day timespan.
He spoke with the reporters on Saturday noting he’s been cleared to return in the game against Dallas Stars. The team is currently lagging behind the Stars by 6 points for the top spot in the Central Division. During his absence, the team took care of the games to grab the perfect spot for a Stanley Cup run.
Makar told the reporters that he’s now “Ready to go” and assist the team in the upcoming games. Unfortunately, the Norris Trophy winner had to sit out 5 straight games due to his injury. It was 9 of the last 10 games due to two separate hits to his head.

Cale Makar first suffered his head injury against Pittsburgh Penguins Jeff Carter on February 7 but returned to the game shortly. It was reported that the defenceman felt okay after some time and was cleared by the medical team. His second hit came against St. Louis on February 18.
On Friday after practice, Makar said, “I can’t put myself in positions to take those kind of hits”. “But at the same time stuff happens. Couple of unlucky bounces.” “I love watching hockey. But I hate watching my own games”.
“These things take time and I think us as a team and individuals understand that. There’s no pressure from anybody in terms of trying to rush back.” Makar leads the NHL in ice time, averaging nearly 27 minutes in a game.
In the 2022-23 season, he recorded 45 points in 46 games with 13 goals and 32 assists. In his NHL career, he scored 225 points in 224 games with 61 goals and 164 assists. As he’s returning to the lineup he expressed how thankful he is to his team, for giving him the time to heal.
He expressed his symptoms were mild and that he was okay to return to practice and games. He didn’t want to rush into things, especially after suffering from his 2nd hit. “I’m not going to put myself in a situation where I can hurt myself more”.
“I would have been more inclined to feel like playing if I didn’t have that first collision after this one. I think it would have been fine. Obviously you don’t want these things to compound.” “There are so many things that we still have to learn about injuries like this. I still think the league does its best to protect guys from this.”
