Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar has produced astonishing plays over the years since his debut in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs. The young Avs star has continuously kept his foes on their toe ice and has achieved records like 246 points in 238 games in his career.
The Norris Trophy winner has often been named as a phenomenal defenceman in NHL and was also awarded for his gentlemanly behavior. Following last year’s Stanley Cup run, Wayne Gretzky compared Makar to National Hockey League’s legendary defenceman Bobby Orr.
While getting compared to Orr is a huge honor in itself, Makar focused on not getting over the top for the comparison. He stated that he is “humbled” to be compared to such a titan “but for me, just kind of bringing it down to Earth a little bit.”
Cale Makar can’t comprehend the idea of being compared to Bobby Orr

In his latest talk with ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, Cale Makar said that “those are crazy comments” to be made. The 24-year-old defenceman found it “hard for me to comprehend” since he has yet to achieve any significant results.
He noted that the accomplishments made by Bobby Orr are “pretty much insurmountable” and he’s “nowhere near that point yet.” “I’m still so young,” Cale said. NHL legend Wayne Gretzky compared him to Orr considering his 2022 Stanley Cup performance.
He was one of the players whose plays assisted in the Avs winning the Cup. According to theScore, Makar and Orr had nearly the same points added to their credits in the first four seasons. However, Orr achieved a greater height during his era and set the bar ridiculously high.
Both Gretzky and VGK coach Bruce Cassidy praised Makar and compared him to the Boston Bruins legend. ‘The Great One’ called the Avs defenceman “the closest player” they’ve ever seen both “offensively and defensively”.
Makar’s comparison to Orr was further cemented by the fact that he was the youngest defenceman to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in the same season. He’s accomplishments were further recognized as the young star was chosen as the “NHL 24” cover athlete. With this, he has joined past star athletes like Alex Ovechkin, and Jarome Iginla.
Makar said that he may surpass Bobby Orr in the future, but as of now he’ll stay grounded and do his best in the upcoming matches. As of now, both the stars have achieved one Norris Trophy, Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe, and Calder Trophy. Greater things are expected from Cale Makar as the defenceman is still young in the NHL.
