“Wanted to create something to express” – Californian artist captures social media attention via Sharks Reverse Retro Jersey drawing

Californian artist draws NHL Reverse Retro Jerseys

The Californian artist who goes by the pseudonym Chicken K. has once again gained social media recognition through his brilliant picture painting of the just-released NHL Reverse Retro Jersey by Adidas. His stylizing of the sweaters excited the fans, but it wasn’t only for them.

Chicken K. is a big fan of the Sharks after he witnessed their magic on ice right before the 2019-2020 season. What started as a hobby has now become a passionate job. The Columbus Blue Jackets contacted the artist last week to commission him to create another masterpiece.

It was in honor of winning the match against the Vancouver Canucks as part of the team’s “Off the Draw” program. This program highlights artists who are inspired by the sport. Chicken K. surely fits the description in this regard.

Chicken K. further popularizes NHL Reverse Retro Jerseys through his stylized artistry

The pen-named artist drew the Sharks forward Matt Nieto donning the recent 2022-23 Retro Jersey. During a telephone interview with NHL.com, he stated, “That was the inspiration for it”. “They’ve been teasing the designs for a while.” 

“And the jerseys were released right around my six-year anniversary of moving to California, so I just wanted to create something to express love for this place.”

“I didn’t really get in to hockey until shortly before the pandemic. I was never a sports person”. “A good friend of mine took me to see the Sharks in person and it was about the coolest thing I’ve ever done. It was such an experience.”

The Columbus Blue Jackets design included the team’s mascot Stinger portraying a famous scene from the 1993 movie “Free Willy”, featuring an orca whale similar to the Canucks logo. Though his 9-5 job keeps him busy all day round, hockey has squeezed into his time zone to fit the bills for future artistry needs.
