“Something you never want to see” – Canucks booed off ice as flying jerseys hit floor following defeat to Sabres
Fans frustrated with Vancouver Canucks losing streak
This wasn’t the first time the Vancouver Canucks had this experience of being booed off the ice. In 2021 a similar incident took place when the team disappointed their fan base with their poor playstyle. Last year in December Canucks jerseys hit the ice after losing to the Pittsburg Penguins.
They ran with a score of 8-15-2, securing last place in the Pacific Division. Soon after this incident head coach and general manager Travis Green and Jim Benning saw themselves out of the team. A similar incident replayed itself in the recent match against the Sabres.
Some even said that current head coach Bruce Boudreau may not have his seat secured if the team’s losing streak continues further. He stated, “It’s the first time I’ve been involved in that. I hope the players feel the same way I feel about it: it’s just totally embarrassing”. “It’s something you never want to see.”

The Canucks must be having a feeling of deja vu in this regard. Only the tip of the NHL 2022-23 season has begun and the team has started to fail its audience. They are the only team who’s yet to score a win this round while standing with a -11 goal difference and a 0-4-2 record. Compared to the progress of the other NHL teams, the Canucks have taken 82 steps back so far.
The recent loss snapped off the thin string that held the fans and the team together. Boudreau stated, “I’ve seen it happen in other arenas and everything, but I never thought it would happen here or on a team that I’m coaching. But if I was the fans, I would have been frustrated, too, because they’re watching what we’re watching.”
Only boos could be heard from the arena when winger Curtis Lazar ran and scooped off the first jersey from the ice as it touched the floor. Canucks couldn’t deliver the promise to the fans to play better this season, as they dropped to a 5-1 loss to the Sabres.
Lazar stated, “It’s the history of it”. “I’ve grown up a fan. It’s not only about us. It’s the present and the past — the Sedins (Canuck Hall-of-Famers Daniel and Henrik), the Stan Smyls, the Orland Kurtenbachs, the list goes on and on with guys that have worn that jersey and been proud to represent this organization and this city.”
Canucks captain Bo Horvat commented, “My jersey got thrown on the ice last year and I’ll never forget that for as long as I play”. “It’s something that hits home, and when you see it again happening this year, it definitely sucks. But I understand their frustration.”
“We haven’t really given them much to cheer about. It’s been a lot of years in the rebuild stage and. . . at this point in the season, it just feels like it’s never going to happen, like we’re never going to win again.”
Though the Canucks fans have been upset with the team’s play, it is no doubt that they love them as much. Seeing your favorite team on a losing streak is tough. The fans deserve that much-needed win and so does the team. The season has just started and we’ll see how the Canucks handle the pressure in the future.
