“It’s OK to ask for help” – Canadiens goalie Carey Price shares story of his battle with alcoholism
Carey Price
Due to further medical complexities Montreal Canadiens goalie, Carey Price will not be stepping onto NHL ice as of now. His 2021 knee surgery has been costing him many games, as he last played on April 29. Going through so much stress both mentally and physically made the goalie rely on substance use.
It was not only the pain that kept the 35-year-old away from the games last season but also because he indulged himself in the wrong path. Recently during an interview with The Athletic, he opened up about the issue of his alcoholism and the road taken after that.
He joined the NHL/NHLPA Players Assistance Program to mend himself. He stated, “I could have done this privately”. “Nobody ever would have known about it. But at the end of the day, I wanted to be able to show it’s OK to ask for help.”
Carey Price opens up about alcoholism and mental stress
Players from different sections of the sports world have come forward to share their problems publicly, be it alcoholism or issues with mental stability. Carey Price’s courage to stand strong made Habs fans support him immensely. He said that he voluntarily admitted himself to the rehabilitation facility on October 7, 2021.
He said, “I think after we lost in the [2021] Finals and coming close to a goal and having a surgery, and knowing I’m right on the 18th hole [of my career] here, I was not a happy person”. ‘
I wasn’t being a good father. I was drinking a lot. I just got to a point where I was like, ‘I’m not even having fun doing this.’ Like, ‘what am I doing?’ I felt like I was getting to a point in my life where I had to make a decision.”
Price also talked about mental health, “There’s a lot of pressure on athletes these days, I think even more so with social media, media attention, you’re always under the microscope”. “And I think no matter how good you are at dealing with it, it’s still a weight on your mind, the pressure to perform.”
The 2015 Hart and Vezina Trophy winner has some past memories of substance use. He has seen his family and friends pass away because of it. It is also a big issue in Canada’s First Nation Communities.
Just like he’s trying to get back in shape, the fans and teammates are supporting him on the sideline. We hope for the goalie to get well soon and stand strong in front of the net once again.
