“Elite competitiveness and elite hockey intelligence” – Center Peyton Krebs hopes to be Sabres ‘shining knight’

Center Peyton Krebs has finally found his place after the franchise-altering 2021 blockbuster deal with the Vegas, which is commonly referred to as the “Jack Eichel trade”. The fans wish that someday in the future it will rather be referred to as the “Peyton Krebs trade” unlike focusing on the previous one.

During the 2021 trade, the Sabres captain Jack Eichel was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for center Peyton Krebs, and forward Alex Tuch, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2023 second-rounder. He stated, “Being traded was a shock at the start”. “You get drafted by a team and you obviously want to play as long as you can with that team, but as I got to know the people in Buffalo and Rochester, I felt more at home every day.”

With Vegas, Krebs scored only 1 assist in 13 NHL games in 2 seasons, but he showed great improvement after his move to Rochester. Americans’ coach Seth Appert commented, “Peyton has elite competitiveness and elite hockey intelligence, so you combine those two things together and you have such a great framework to start as a hockey player”. “His character as a human and as a hockey player is an off-the-charts high.”

His performance in AHL earned him a call back to Sabres where he posted 7 goals and 22 points in 48 games. Krebs said, “When you get called up for the first time, you’re nervous”. “You don’t want to mess up, you don’t have that calm to your game. I can make all those plays, but I need to add some calmness and not rush the offense. I want to score every shift, but I need to have a more time-and-place mentality.”

Though Sabres are expecting quite a positive play from him in the future, Krebs himself stated that he is focusing on the present. He said, “I’m a live-in-the-moment guy”. “The biggest thing was just getting comfortable being myself, that’s the biggest mentality, just be yourself and don’t try to be a player you’re not.” As he continues his skate on the ice, his confidence in himself will rise, ultimately affecting his play. The team believes he will shine through all his adversities.
