The opening day of the National Hockey League 2023-24 season is here. On the first day, the headlines were dominated by the matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks. However, something strange happened during the game at the PPG Paints Arena. Pittsburgh fans would break out a huge “Fire Canada” chant during the game.
For the unversed, this chant has been started by the Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase who are protesting against their OC Matt Canada. The Steelers offensive coordinator has been under tremendous heat from the fans following their poor offensive form this season. This chant was widely heard during their game against the Cleveland Browns.
Despite winning that game, the Steelers fans were unimpressed with the style of Canada. For several years now, they have been calling for him out. The hatred among fans grew to the next level when one fan allegedly paid actor Dean Norris to send him a hate message.
The fans from Pittsburgh were in full attendance during the game between the Blackhawks and the Penguins. They made sure their voices were heard and broke down in a fierce chant during an NHL game. Check out this development from a tweet shared on X below:
Fans issue brutal warning to Matt Canada during NHL game between Penguins and Blackhawks
The matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins was one of the most anticipated ones. The battle between veteran Sidney Crosby and youngster Connor Bedard was the one fans had been eager to watch. This game is now drawing headlines for the chants from a different sport and the reason for is Matt Canada.
The 51-year-old is probably the least favorite person in Steel City right now. The chants against one person in a completely different sport, tell the stories and hatred among fans regarding him. Despite being top of the AFC North division, the Steelers rank bottom of the NFL offensive stats, something the fans are not keen on.
The chants of “Fire Canada” probably even confused some NHL fans. During the game, the Penguins had three, while the Hawks had thirteen players from the North American country. They are now relieved to find out that they were not the ones whom the fans were protesting against.
Speaking of the game, the Blackhawks came back from 2-0 down to win the game 4-2. While Crosby scored the opening goal, Bedard would set up the opener for his side. Meanwhile, the Steelers on the other hand are not playing until October 22. This could bring in a little relief for Canada as he gears up to face an uphill battle against the fanbase.
