Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar felt anxious as he waited for the arrival of the Stanley Cup near Carolina Ice Palace on Tuesday. And his anxiousness is quite justified, as the Avalanche won its first Cup since 2001. Many players from the team have already spent their day with the Cup and now it was Bednar’s time.

He was all jittery until Phil Pritchard and Mike Bolt from the Hockey Hall of Fame pulled up their white van and carried the Cup into the rink. Seeing the Cup Bednar commented, “I was anxious to see it again”. The 50-year-old celebrated their victory after the team won the finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 26. He was also a part of the Denver parade which took place four days later.

Jared Bednar enjoyed Tuesday with the Cup, his family, his friends, and Charleston itself, which became his home after 15 seasons as a player and a coach with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL from 1995-2009. It was the Carolina Ice Palace from where his journey as a coach began in 2002.

As noted on nhl.com, Bednar said, “We practiced here and obviously you’re involved in minor hockey trying to grow the game here in Charleston”. “So, my first thought was to try to get it here and share it a little bit with the minor hockey community here in Charleston.” Bednar spent nearly three hours taking photos and speaking with the fans, as others waited in line for their chance to come.

Thinking about his days from where it started, Bednar noted, “I think about it a lot”. “It’s a long journey to try to get to the NHL and an even tougher journey to try to win the Cup. We’ve been able to do that in Colorado, and it’s been an amazing ride. That doesn’t happen for me without my time here in Charleston.” The Cup’s next stop will be in Europe but Bednar will still have it for one more day at Humboldt for the charity Golf Tournament.
