The ongoing World Juniors Championship saw a major shock this week as Team Canada suffered a heartbreaking loss against Team Czechia. The 2023 gold medal winners were eliminated from the competition after conceding a very late goal that saw them lose 3-2. The hockey lovers of Canada including Chicago Blackhawks superstar Connor Bedard were left heartbroken.
The 18-year-old had been part of the Junior team for the past two seasons. The youngster had shined for his national team during the 2023 triumph. Following this loss, he opened up about how Canadians took pride in their hockey.
After trailing the game by two goals early on, Canada found their way back in the game and made it 2-2. As the match entered its final minute of the regulation period, a deflected goal from Jakub Stancl off the stick of Oliver Bonk gave Czechia the lead with just 11 seconds to go. The win saw them book their place in the semi-finals.
While there was joy in Czechia, hearts were broken in Canada. When asked about this, Bedard said:
I know a lot of guys on the team, and being a Canadian, we take a lot of pride in that. I just feel bad for those guys and how hard they played. It sucks, for sure.Connor Bedard on Team Canada’s loss against Czechia at the 2024 World Juniors Championship.
Connor Bedard and Blackhawks suffer third successive loss
Things are not just working out for the Chicago Blackhawks this season. The team depleted by injuries continues to struggle on the road. Following their back-to-back defeats against the Dallas Stars including an 8-1 hammering, the team has now lost their third straight game.
The latest loss comes at the hands of the Nashville Predators. The Hawks were once again nowhere near the level of their opposition and suffered a 3-0 defeat. This extended their losing run on the road to 12 games.
For the most part, Bedard and his side were unable to generate any sort of offense. They managed just 21 shots in the game, with their rookie superstar failing to manage any of them, signaling their struggles going forward.
To make matters worse, they lost another forward to the injury list as Anthony Beauvillier went off the game in the second period and did not return. He is now reported to be dealing with an upper-body blow.
While Bedard has done his bit, the Blackhawks have failed to gel together and work. They are right now bottom of their division table with an 11-24-2 record. With just 24 points on the board, they have the second-worst record in the entire NHL apart from the San Jose Sharks who only have 21 points with a 9-26-3 record in 38 games. The Blackhawks now face the New York Rangers and will be hoping to avoid a fourth successive loss.
