Chicago Blackhawks phenom Connor Bedard took a hilarious jab at NHL legend Wayne Gretzky‘s “I could never do that” comment on his jaw-dropping ‘Michigan’ goal. The conversation took place prior to the team’s faceoff against Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday.
Bedard was asked what he thought of Gretzky’s high praise on his lacrosse-style shot. He admitted that he was taken aback by the sole fact that ‘The Great One’ even knows him. “To hear him talk about me…is pretty special,” Bedard said. Having been acknowledged by the greatest player of all time is surely a dream come true, which Bedard got to relish.

The fans were also excited to hear Gretzky shower so much praise to Bedard. In a recent interview, the 18-year-old was asked if he thinks Gretzky could have pulled the ‘Michigan’ shot back in his heyday. His reply amused the fans and the reporters,

His reply came as a reference to the stick Gretzky used during his era, which featured a mild and flatter curve. On the other hand, Bedard used PP92 to pull off the amazing flip shot at the back of the net, as his stick’s curves helped elevate the puck in the air. Currently, in the NHL, this type of stick is popular comparing to Gretzky’s time.
Despite jokingly commenting on Gretzky’s possible vice, he confirms that ‘The White Tornado’ would have been able to do it pretty well if he tried, “I’m sure if he tried, he could do it pretty well.” Bedard admitted that it’s “hard to get space behind the net” but “it’s fancier” if it scores.
Although there are times when the goalie can skillfully stop these shots, it can also “catch them off guard” at times. He also spoke about Trevor Zegras’ ‘Michigan’ shot which took place on the same night. Bedard even stated that it may have been a better version than his lacrosse-style shot.
Wayne Gretzky says ‘no’ to daughter Emma after getting awestruck with Connor Bedard’s ‘Michigan’ goal
‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky highly praised Chicago Blackhawks phenom Connor Bedard after the 18-year-old performed the ‘Michigan’ goal amid the highly paced game against St.Louis Blues. He said “I could never do that” when his daughter Emma questioned, “Dad, did you ever do that?”

Gretzky said “no” to Emma noting, “I couldn’t do what he did tonight.” While speaking on Bally St.Louis, he said the lacrosse-style goal coming from a young NHLer “was fun to watch”.
That just wasn’t in my repertoire. I didn’t have the right kind of curve…he’s been fun to watch. He’s probably better than we anticipated.Wayne Gretzky on X.
However, this wasn’t the first time Bedard attempted the ‘Michigan’ goal. According to NBC Sports, he tried to perform the same shot in the World Juniors but was stopped efficiently by the goalie. The goal scripted another epic point in Bedard’s extraordinary NHL resume.
The whole arena vibrated with cheers as fans celebrated the special moment which tied the Blackhawks’ score to 1-1 in the first period. It was a moment neither Connor Bedard nor the fans will ever forget. Especially, not after getting high praise from ‘The Great One’ himself.
