Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid sealed his 500th National Hockey League match against the Washington Capitals on Monday night. It was a night to behold, as both McDavid and Capitals star Alex Ovechkin tried to one-up each other to accomplish their own victory feat.
As NBC Sports Washington’s Craig Laughlin said, “Superstars try to one up each other and both of them were absolutely fabulous tonight.” Though the focus point fell more on McDavid accomplishing the milestone at the age of 25. As the leader of the active players, he recorded 724 points in 500 games with 472 assists.
Forward Zach Hyman stated, “I think it’s a pretty big milestone, 500, and he’s done it really quickly, and in that time paced the League in pretty much every stat”. “So his work on the ice speaks for itself.”
“Playing against him, I got firsthand experience at that … and being his teammate you kind of see how much work goes into being the player that he is and the person that he is. He’s got the talent, but the work ethic is matched as well.” On Monday night, the captain also surpassed Sidney Crosby’s NHL game record.

Upon reaching this extraordinary feat, the Oilers’ captain stated, “It goes quick”. “You get the chance to live out my dream and play in the NHL. To have done it for 500 games now, it means a lot to me. I know there’s not a lot of guys that get to that number, so it’s special to me.”
Crosby stood with 706 points with 453 assists. Most probably he’ll be ranked 6th in points behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny, Mike Bossy, and Jari Kurri. His remarkable game consistency earned him many titles including last season’s Art Ross Trophy for 4th time, Hart Trophy twice, and three-time Ted Lindsay Award Winner.
Oilers coach Jay Woodcraft said, “What he’s done and been able to accomplish in such a short time is amazing,”. “He’s a generational player. He’s someone that I don’t think gets enough credit on the leadership side of things.”
“I’ve seen a young man mature over those 500 games. I’ve seen a player evolve and mature, and he’s a treat to be around and a treat to watch operate on a day in and day out basis.”
McDavid further congratulated and expressed his awe against Ovechkin and Crosby, saying, “You look at a guy like Sid, who I think has changed his game a little bit here and there a few times over, it’s so incredible to see,”. “And obviously ‘Ovi,’ you know what you’re going to get every single night. I’m so impressed with what those two have done for how long they’ve done it and will continue to do it. It’s amazing to watch.”
