Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid recently voiced his opinion regarding National Hockey League’s shootout format. He doesn’t hesitate to say that “It’s a crappy way to finish a game”. It’s not only McDavid but many players and sometimes even fans who have pointed out their dissatisfaction on the matter.
In his recent talk with ‘Tim and Friends’, he spoke out on this matter and said that he would rather play 3-on-3 overtime than have to deal with shootouts. Though the extended OT will be 10 mins it’ll be better. Even while pointing out his opinion he doesn’t forget to take the player’s health into consideration.
He states that the 10 minutes extra may undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on the player and his health, but it’ll also excite and encourage them as well as the fan base. The 26-year-old is not in for of criticizing the league in this matter but still doesn’t hesitate to voice out his opinion.
Kevin Bieksa supports Connor McDavid view of changing NHL format
During his talk with ‘Tim and Friends’, 2x Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid said, “I would like that”. “No one loves the shootout. It’s a crappy way to finish a game. At the end of the day, it’s about the players’ health and safety. It’s a long season.”
“The overtime taxes a lot of guys. Making that longer could have some effects there, but I agree with you in the sense that no one wants to see the game end in a shootout.”
Ex-NHLer and current hockey analyst Kevin Bieksa doubled down o Oilers 97, agreeing with what he said. He took a step further stating the ties should be called off by NHL. Kevin commented, “It’s the first [time] I’ve actually thought about it, but I would love 10 minutes of 3-on-3 [overtime] and then axe the shootout”.
“Shootout was exciting when it first came because before that, we were ending games in ties. And we were like, ‘No, this isn’t soccer. We want to see a winner.’
“And then the shootout was great — it served its purpose. It got some offensive explosion and [we] got to see some great moves. And now I think it’s kind of fizzled out and you got to keep evolving. I love the 10-minute 3-on-3.”
So far in the 2022-23 season, the 45 games have ended in shootouts. This must have frustrated not only McDavid but also other players. If the league does listen to the concerns and suggestions leading to extended over time, the number would decrease while increasing entertainment value.
