The 2023-24 season has not started well for the Edmonton Oilers. After enduring an 8-1 devasting loss in the first match, the team has struggled in its opening games. Their recent game against the Winnipeg Jets saw them lose 3-2, making it just one win in the first five games. On top of that, captain Connor McDavid is now expected to miss action for around 1-2 weeks.
The star forward sustained an upper-body injury, which gave him trouble. As a result of this, he was unable to play the last five minutes of the game against the Jets. He is reported to have suffered this injury during the match itself.
As the game remained level at 2-2 in the regulation period, the match went into overtime. Prior to this, the reigning MVP skated a bit around the ice but did not return for the action. Before going off the ice he registered two assists in this game.
The game was decided in the OT as Mark Scheifele won the game for the Jets. This just now increases the pressure on coach Jay Woodcraft and his side from here on.
"Connor McDavid suffered an upper body injury during last night's game vs. the Jets & is expected to be out of the Oilers lineup for one to two weeks".
Can the Edmonton Oilers cope with the loss of Connor McDavid?
When things seem to be going against them, teams usually look to their main players to get them out of this jam. For the Edmonton Oilers, things are not working out well. They would have hoped to see their Captain Connor McDavid lead them out from the front. With him now being confirmed to miss action, can they cope without him?
There is no doubt that McDavid is the crucial piece of attack for the Oilers. He went on to amaze over 150 points last season, which saw him win the Hart Trophy. However, despite his absence, the team does possess an attacking threat in the form of Evander Kane and Leon Draisaitl.
While Draisaitl is the leading scorer in goals and points for the team, Kane has yet to fully get into action this season. The left winger only has one assist so far this season. With McDavid out for a while, it provides a good chance for him and Draisaitl to show off their attacking prowess and take away some pressure from their captain’s shoulder.
After a meeting with the Minnesota Wild, the Oilers will fly back to home turf to take on the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Kraken Stars, and Nashville Predators. Needless to say, they will need a much-improved performance in these games to get their season back on track without McDavid on the team.
