Every superstar needs an inspiration. While Connor McDavid continues to awe the audiences with his breath taking performances, he too needs some inspiration. So who does he go to? The answer is Scottie Scheffler.
The Edmonton Oilers captain joined the Sportsnet panel before his team’s all-Canadian matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs and was asked whom does he go for inspiration. This led to Connor McDavid naming Scottie Scheffler as one athlete who inspires him.
The 27-year-old NHLer recalled the recent victory of the golfer at The Players Championship. McDavid would hail this performance from Scheffler as “unbelievable“.
I love all sports. I love the great players, when they step up in big moments. I think about Scottie Scheffler a couple weekends ago at the Players, what he did on Sunday, it’s unbelievable.Connor McDavid on Scottie Scheffler on Sportsnet.
Scheffler, the current World No.1, scripted history on last Sunday. His victory at the TPC Sawgrass saw him become the first golfer to successfully defend The Players Championship title after he had won the event in 2023 as well.
This also came after he found himself five shots behind leader Xander Schauffele to start the final round. This “step up” from him is what caught the eye of McDavid and left him stunned just like many other people.
Will Connor McDavid win the Hart Trophy again this season?
There is no denying of the fact that Connor McDavid is once again having a fantastic season. After collecting over 150 points last season, he was named the league MVP and was awarded the Hart Trophy. This year he might not cross the 150-point mark again but can be win this trophy again this season?
The start of the 2023-24 season was not a good one for the Oilers and McDavid. Their poor performances led to the dismissal of coach Jay Woodcroft and raised questions regarding the decline in form of McDavid.
However, both Oilers and McDavid bounced back from this and are currently in contention for the playoffs. So will this resurgence see the Canadian international be crowned the league MVP again. Currently, he is sitting on third for the most points this seasons with 115 (26 goals and 89 assists) behind Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov, who both just like McDavid are having a great campaign.
The record McDavid though is currently looking at is the number of assists. He is now just 11 assists short of becoming the fourth player in NHL history to register 100 assists in a single season after Wayne Gretzky (who did it 11 times), Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.
If McDavid does accomplish this feat and help the Oilers advance further in the Stanley Cup playoffs, he might just claim the Hart Trophy for the fourth time in his career. Will he able to fend off his rivals though is something many are now looking forward to.
