The 2023–24 season is not going as predicted for the Edmonton Oilers. They were supposed to challenge for the title following their heartbreaking loss to the eventual winners, the Vegas Golden Knights, in the Western Conference finals. Things have gone drastically wrong, which has now pissed off Connor McDavid.

The Oilers captain has been their star player for years now. Despite winning the MVP award last season while collecting over 150 points, his failure to land the Stanley Cup has seen many criticize him. So for the Oilers to start off in such poor fashion has got fans angry—something new coach Kris Knoblauch will have to do.

He takes over the job from former coach Jay Woodcroft, who was fired recently. The name of McDavid was also seen highlighting this conversation as rumors emerged that he was involved in his firing.

The team executives later denied this and claimed that no player was involved in Woodcroft’s discussion. Jeff Marek, an NHL insider, recently discussed things about McDavid through The Hockey Feed.

Kris Knoblauch hoping to help Connor McDavid out of slump

The pressure is certainly on the shoulders of Kris Knoblauch. A change at the start of the season is never easy. Moreover, with the high stakes for the Edmonton Oilers, things just get more difficult than ever. Knoblauch is now hoping to help Connor McDavid get out of this slump and his “pissed off” phase as the season progresses.

The two have known each other for a long time, as Knoblauch would coach him during the early stages of his career in the minor leagues. However, things are different in the major leagues. With McDavid currently not firing on all cylinders, it will be hard to get his feelings out and transform them into energy that could help the team.

Whether he can do it or not is the question on the minds of many. An angry Connor McDavid could be dangerous for both the team and the opposition. However, given their past relationship, he is the most suitable man for this job.

The Oilers also recorded a 4-1 triumph over the New York Islanders in his first game in charge. Goals from Leon Draisaitl, Evander Kane, and of course, Connor McDavid saw them win. Knoblauch would hope these three can continue to shine as he helps them turn things around.
