As the 2023-24 NHL season rolls on, the pace of action has also increased in the league. In these high-paced games, the number of hits on players has also seen a rise. Following one such dangerous hit, Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak has now received one game misconduct for his actions against New York Rangers‘ Ryan Lindgren.
The incident took place during the recent game between the two sides. It occurred late in the second period when the two got involved in a dangerous collision. As Lindgren tried to clear the puck, Pastrnak came in hard at him which resulted in him crashing into his opponent. The Rangers star’s head then collided face-first with the glass wall.
Following this hit, a little scuffle broke down between the players. Lindgren came out the worst from this hit as he immediately made his way through the locker room. He was seen to be bleeding above his eye and wrapped a towel across his head. He was given a five-minute major penalty for this action which left the Rangers’ defenceman bleeding on the ice field.
Coach Jim Montgomery left stunned by David Pastrnak’s misconduct penalty
Hits in the National Hockey League (NHL) are pretty common. In every game, tempers flare sometimes resulting in players cross-checking their opponents. In some situations, things boil over and a huge scrum breaks out. While there was no huge brawl this time, David Pastrnak was given a five-minute major penalty. Later the officials called it a one-game misconduct which left coach Jim Montgomery stunned.
The Bruins coach was expecting him (Pastrnak) to sit out for a few minutes following that clash. However, he was surprised to find out the winger had been assessed a one-game misconduct. This also comes at a time when the fans have been debating the decision taken against David Perron. The Detroit Red Wings star was given a six-game suspension following his cross-check on Artem Zub.
Speaking after the game, Montogomery disagreed with the decision taken by the officials. He said as quoted by Yahoo Sports:
Very surprised. I thought it was two minutes. I don’t think he hits him anywhere near his numbers. I think he hits him on the front of his shoulder. Unfortunately, (Lindgren) got hurt, so if there’s blood, it affects the call.Jim Montgomery on David Pastrnak’s misconduct penalty.
The Bruins later went on to lose the game in overtime. Prior to this, Pastrnak had only been suspended once in 2016 for an illegal hit to the head of then-Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi. Whether there will be further actions from the NHL also remains to be seen.
