From the get-go, Montreal Canadien’s newbie David Reinbacher has come under the NHL spotlight and in a negative way. The 18-year-old, reportedly, has been receiving hate messages and death threats from some Canadien fans following his No. 5 draft selection by the franchise.
Social media has been divided over the defenceman’s draft pick, as some support the player while others don’t. According to Hockeyfeed, the Canadiens picking Reinbacher stunned the fans and some couldn’t take it lightly.
It’s worse for the young joinee as his journey on NHL roads started off with Carey Price’s stupefying mistake followed by fan hatred. Many expected the team to call out Russian player Matvei Michkov as they wanted to see some offensive strength in the lineup. But Michkov was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers, while the Canadiens went for Reinbacher.
Fans support David Reinbacher amidst controversies and hate messages on social media
There were fans who started booing as soon as the organization called out David Reinbacher’s name. While fans are free to have their own opinion, sending death threats is not acceptable, especially toward an 18-year draft pick.
Many fans came forward to stand by the defenceman’s side and called out the haters to mind their own business. Some even wanted to start a movement on the social platform to show the Canadien joinee their support and love.
Even prior to Reinbacher’s draft pick, Canadien star goalie Carey Price botched his way of calling No.5. Apparently he forgot David’s last name and looked back frantically for help. Thanks to GM Kent Hughes’ quick actions, the welcoming of their players continued smoothly.
Price later apologized to Reinbacher for his mistake and even shook his hand. He also formally apologized on social media for his carelessness. Unfortunately, his apology failed to satisfy NHL legend Roberto Luongo, who poked fun at Price. Regardless, this incident can be called a minor one, compared to the 18-year-old receiving death threats.
Hughes has asked the fans to be patient with the new player and to give him a chance to play on the ice. He also emphasized his trust in Reinbacher and assured that he’ll be staying with the organization for a long time. Hopefully, fans coming up to support Reinbacher ends the hater’s messages, as the young star makes his future NHL debut.
