Without Adam Boqvist’s three-year contract signup, the defenceman could have become a restricted free agent. On Wednesday he avoided the crisis by signing up with the Columbus Blue Jackets, a deal worth $7.8 million for 3-years, with an annual average value of $2.6 million.
The 28-year-old defenceman has set the NHL high in career goals and points this season. He achieved 11 goals and 22 points in 52 games for the Blue Jackets. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks back in the 2018 National Hockey League Entry Draft as the 8th overall.

Adam Boqvist achieved a total of 51 points with 17 goals and 34 assists in 128 regular-season games for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks and scored no points in 8 Stanley Cup Playoff games. The Blackhawks traded him to the Blue Jackets on July 23, 2021. Boqvist registered his first NHL goal in a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on 3rd November 2019.
According to nhl.com, Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said, “Adam is a talented, mobile defenseman with the ability and creativity to provide offence from the blue line”. “Despite some injuries, he had a very good first season with our club at the age of 21 and as he gets bigger and stronger, we believe he has the potential to be a very impactful player in this league.” His career with the Blue Jackets is yet to begin in 2022.
