‘That was sweet’- Doug Wilson has his sentimental affair with the Sharks

Doug Wilson

Doug Wilson is not just a name for the San Jose Sharks. There was a time not much before when the San Jose Sharks were just another team to make the numbers. They weren’t considered a force to be dealt with or a game against them wasn’t that awaited. But as time passed, the Sharks have come a long way, transforming themselves into a year-on-year contender.

The credit for this rapid transformation of fortunes for the Sharks goes to none other than Doug Wilson, who during his stint as general manager changed how things were run at the SAP Center. Sharks in honor of the veteran recognized his contribution to making the Sharks a team that has the potential to go the distance.

The San Jose Sharks were playing against the Chicago Blackhawks, where Wilson spent a better part of his life spanning 14 seasons. He was part of the All-Star team on three occasions and won the Norris Trophy in 1982.

Doug Wilson was introduced to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2021. The Sharks and Blackhawks made a wonderful gesture towards Wilson as they warmed up before the match putting on his jersey. The Shark also dawned his initials on their jersey. A banner was also put up at the SAP Center in honor of Doug.

“It’s appropriate that we’re playing against the Chicago Blackhawks,” he said before the game. “That’s the team that drafted me and I want to really give great appreciation to the organization.” While Doug has been lately associated with the Sharks, the Blackhawks also have plenty of love and affection for him.

Out of 1024 games, Wilson played 86 for the Sharks. When he was the GM for the San Jose Sharks, only Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins were able to win more games than them. This is how much pivotal Wilson was to the Sharks’ renaissance.

Wilson’s work for Bay Arena Hockey is simply unparalleled. And not only his role as a GM for the Sharks, but Doug Wilson also was a marvelous player in his prime. Just look at the catalogs of him playing for the Blackhawks. They’re just surreal. The hockey world salutes the legend for his contribution to the game.
