Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin confirmed he’s out of the March trade market as he re-signed an 8-year $69.6 million contract with the team. It was announced on Wednesday and Larkin will speak with the media after Thursday morning practices. His current deal will earn him an annual average salary of $8.7 million.
The 26-year-old was on the last of his 5-year contract signed back in 2018. He could’ve become a free agent after this season. If he stepped into the market, many teams would’ve fought to be the contender given his expertise in both offense and defensive style plays.
In the 2022-23 season, Larks played in 59 games scoring 22 goals and 35 assists in 57 points. Selected by the Red Wings during the 2014 NHL Draft, Larkins the D-Boss has appeared in 563 regular-season games with 415 points, 169 goals, and 246 assists.
Coach Derek Lalonde glows in praise of Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin
Dylan Larkin has time and again stated how much he loved Detroit and how much it meant for him to be in this organization. In last season’s end-of-season press conference, D-Boss talked about the team, city, and fans, “I’ve been fortunate enough to be here…”
“…just finishing my seventh season and I really love being a Detroit Red Wing, and I love being the captain of the team and this team is going to do special things in the near future”. “I don’t really envision myself being anywhere else, but I also understand there’s a business side of hockey.
“….I love the passion our fans brought to the rink this year.” He further said that he likes the group of players on his team, stating that the atmosphere in the locker room is great, “great locker room that certainly has made the hard times much easier”.
Before the All-Star break rumors of Larkin stepping into the trade market circulated. He stopped all speculations informing the fans that they were false alarms, and nothing of that sort was decided. This contract extension prior deadline proved the rumors wrong. The team is grateful and appreciates his leadership along with his skills.
Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde praised Larkin stating, “I like Dylan the player, like Dylan the human being”. Just like other teams in the Divison, everyone is busy managing and adding a boost to their teams prior Stanley Cup playoff run.
Lalone further complemented the young captain stating that he manages his game really well. When Dylan Larkin is in charge of the puck one doesn’t have to worry, as he’ll get his job done. He further added that “We’ve grown a little bit in a lot of areas and he’s been a driving force of it.”
