After Eric Staal’s recent Friday contract, he expressed how excited he is to stand in the same lineup, donning similar jerseys and playing alongside his younger brother Marc Staal. The last time the duo played together was back in 2015-16 with the New York Rangers.

October 21 will be a memorable day for Eric as he penned down a 1-year $750k deal with the Panthers. He lit up the training camp after attracting no points in the professional tryout with 8 shots on goal in 4 preseason games. He’ll take on the ice during the home game against New York Islanders on Friday.

As far as playing with his brother is considered, he stated, “That was a big reason why I’m doing what I’m doing, to go down there, having him and maybe having that opportunity to play with him”.

“It’s special, one, to play in the League, and then to be able to do that alongside your brother on a team with Stanley Cup aspirations is something that you can only dream about.”

His training camp impressed Panthers‘ coach Paul Maurice as he commented, “He’s had a really strong camp”. “To his credit, I think he might have come to camp in the best shape of his life. There is so much to this man and personality that you’ll all get to see when you spend some time with him, character and leadership.”

“The love of the game, pure love of the game, and the love of the idea of winning. I think he’s great; for it’s a still relatively young core here and having a veteran guy like that, but it’s not just the veteraness, it’s who is he is as man, how he trains, how he competes, how he practices, how he chirps out there, how he’s wired right in. He just makes our organization better.”

In 2020-21 Eric recorded 13 points in 53 games with 5 goals ad 8 assists with the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens. He collected a score of 8 points with 2 goals and 6 assists in 21 Stanley Cup games while helping the Habs reach the Cup Finals. Other than the Habs, and Sabres, he also played with Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, and New York Rangers.

He recorded a total score of 1,034 points in 1,293 regular season games with 441 goals and 593 assists. He also had 59 points with 23 goals and 36 assists in 83 playoff games. He had 4 points in 5 games while captaining Canada at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Maurice noted, “He is truly an easy man to work with because there’s no agenda”. “He just wants to win and he wants to play here, and if he didn’t feel he could help he wouldn’t. He surprised me at camp, quite honestly, to the point that he earned the contract as an NHL player. He was far more dynamic than I thought he would be.”
