Erik Robert Johnson is a professional American ice hockey player for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League. He represented the United States in several tournaments and is popularly known by his nickname “Condor”. During the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft the St.Louis Blues selected him the first overall. He participated for one season at the University of Minnesota after getting drafted by the USA’s National Hockey Team Development Program.
Erik stepped foot in the NHL after his St.Louis drafting in 2007, and later he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche. He made his international debut at the 2005 World U-17 Hockey Challenge as part of the United States team. He also won a gold medal the same year at the U-18 Championships. In Richfield, Erik Johnson was part of the Academy of Holy Angels where he played hockey and recorded a score of 13 goals and 34 points during the 2003-04 season and later started playing for the National Team Development Program. He was top against all defencemen in the U.S National Team of U-17 and U-18, where he led by 26 points in 57 games. During the 2006 -07 season, he led the WCHA Rookie Defenceman with 4 goals and 24 points in 41 games. Later he got selected to the WCHA All-Rookie Team.
Erik had his first career NHL goal after getting drafted by the St.Louis Blues in a 5-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings. He was chosen to participate in the NHL’s 2008 YoungStars Game. January 23, 2013, was a memorable day for Erik Johnson as he posted his 300th career NHL game. He recorded a career-high of 8 hits against the Dallas Star while becoming the second Avalanche player to do so. He got selected for the NHL All-Star Game however he was unable to participate in the game due to his knee injury. He played 73 games to reach the 500-game mark after his recovery and had his 50th career goal against the Dallas Star in 2015. In a game against the Boston Bruins, he successfully registered his 200 career points while relishing his 600th NHL game in December 2017.
