NHL forward Jonathan Huberdeau stated that he is open to the idea of inking down a long-term contract with his new team, the Calgary Flames. Though he didn’t shy away from accepting that his trade to Calgary came as an initial shock to him. Huberdeau, defenceman MacKenzie Weegar, and forward prospect Cole Schwindt were acquired by the Flames in a trade for forward Matthew Tkachuk on Friday.

Huberdeau still has one season remaining with the Panthers in a remaining 6-year  $35.4-year contract on September 7, 2016. He tied for 2nd in NHL with a career-high of 115 points and led the league with 85 assists in 80 games last season. He led the Panthers to win the President’s Trophy for the first time in their history with 58-18-6 and scored 5 points in 10 Stanley Cup Playoff games before being swept by the Lightning in the Eastern Conference Second Round.

On Monday Jonathan Huberdeau stated, “I still have one more year left on my contract”. “I’m open to staying with the Flames, but at the end of the day, it’s not my decision. It’s my general manager (Brad Treliving) and agent who work this out. It would be something I’m open about, and obviously, they’re the ones that traded for me. That means they want me. … You want to play for a team that wants you, and that’s all I want.”

Both Huberdeau and Weegar believe that Flames can remain a contender for the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau. As noted on nhl.com, Weegar commented, “The team looks really good,”. “For you guys, it’s been an emotional week with the ups and downs of losing two great players. But ‘Huby’ and I coming in, hopefully, you get a little more excitement. It’s not a rebuild either. We’re here to win, and I think Brad knows that. He wants to win now, and the team wants to win now. Johnny and I are ready to start winning with this team.”
