Kaapo Kakko sign 2-year contract with New York Rangers

Forward player Kaapo Kakko signs a two-year contract extension with the New York Rangers on Thursday. The contract is worth $4.2 million with an annual cap hit of $2.1 million. Rangers general manager Chris Drury announced the agreement yesterday as they successfully penned down the 2019 2nd overall draft pick.

In the last season, the 21-year-old forward scored 18 points with 7 goals and 11 assists in 43 regular-season games and 5 points with 2 goals and 3 assists in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games. With the Rangers, till now he has made 58 points with 26 goals and 32 assists in 157 regular-season games and 5 points in 22 playoff games.

After Kaapo Kakko’s 2-year contract expires he will become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights in 2024. With his signing, all of Rangers’ restricted free agents are now under contract and the club retains a little more than $1 million cap space based on a 22-man shadow roster. According to nypost.com, the Rangers are likely to remain adamant for the next season after looking at their cap space.

The New York Rangers lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning by 52-24-6 in the Eastern Conference Finals last season. They have currently signed contracts with center Vincent Trocheck to a 7-year deal, and goalie Jaroslav Halak to a 1-year contract in free agency. Goalie Alexander Georgiev was traded to the Avalanche on July 7th, while their other players Ryan Strome, Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano, and Justin Braun left the free agency.
