“Haven’t really thought too much about it” – Forward Timo Meier and Sharks yet to begin discussions on contract extension

Timo Meier

On Wednesday at the NHL European Player Media Tour, San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier stated that he is yet to talk with the team’s general manager about his contract extension. General manager Mike Grier was appointed the team’s GM on July 5 and Mike mentioned how he’s been “getting to know each other”, over a telephonic conversation.

On October 8, Meier will be entering the last phase of his 4-year contract signed back on July 1, 2019. He further stated that he’s excited to meet Grier and the new coach David Quinn in person, once he returns to San Jose for next month’s training camp. Meier mentioned, “There have been big changes and I haven’t met these people yet, so I’m looking forward to meeting them and getting going and meeting the new players that we acquired”.

Regarding his contract, Timo Meier said, “There hasn’t been any conversation about that”. “I haven’t really thought too much about it, to be honest. I know my contract is up in a year, but I’m trying to focus on getting ready for the season and getting ready physically, doing my work during the offseason, and having a good start to the season. So that’s kind of my only focus right now since the other stuff hasn’t been brought up and I’m not a guy that likes to think too much about that stuff.”

Meier set a career-high of 35 goals, 41 assists, and 76 points in 77 games, after having a standout season. If he signs the deal extension, he will be able to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2023-24 season. After defenceman Brent Burns to Hurricanes on July 13th, Grier stated that he would like to have Meier stay with the team, “Timo is a good player”. “We hope he wants to be here, and until I hear otherwise, I’ll assume this is the place he wants to be.”
