“He’s an important piece” – Twitter concerned as Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog undergoes knee surgery, out for 12 weeks

The Avs will once again be without their captain this NHL season. Issues arose on October 13 when Gabriel Landeskog missed the final 23 games of the previous season after his knee surgery on March 14. During the 2022 playoffs, he scored 22 points in 20 games with 11 goals and 11 assists, leading the team to victory.

Though he returned for the playoffs this year, the recurring pain started acting up every now and then. The Cup champion had frequently missed morning skates during the Stanley run, to manage his recuperation routine. On Tuesday, the team updated about the captain stating he’ll not be putting skates on for at least 12 weeks.

The 29-year-old Cup champion underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this week. Avs coach Jared Bednar stated, “But Gabe is a huge part of it, right? Just his presence and calming influence on our locker room and the input he has. It’s very timely. It’s very specific”. “

It’s like he’s an extension of the coaching staff. So we miss him, no question. Never mind what he does on the ice. Just being around and his leadership and being able to sort of connect with all the guys in our locker room — he’s an important piece.”

It’s up to the Avs players to boost their game till their captain returns, hopefully by mid-January. The team has a series of powerful players lined up. They all need to come together and pull this off to put their captain’s mind at ease.

Bednar said, “We’ve got a strong core of guys that can lead in our room, no question”. “They’re not even all wearing letters. (Defensemen Devon) Toews, (Cale) Makar — like go through the [roster]. (Josh) Manson. We got experienced guys in the back and up front, obviously, too.”

Even before Landeskog underwent the surgery, the team mentally prepared their fans for his absence from the 2022-23 NHL season. Till now with the team, he has recorded a score of 571 points in 738 games with 248 goals and 323  assists. It’ll be his 12th NHL season with the Avalanche once he starts in January.

Bednar further emphasized, “[Injuries are] part of the game, you got to go without him”. “If we’re going to be without him, hopefully everything goes smooth with his rehab, and we were without him for 12 weeks there, give or take and, and we’ll get him back for an important stretch run.”
