Former Capitals player Garnet Hathaway gifts his son Luke Justin Turner’s foul ball on his 2nd birthday. The NHLer took his son to Fenway Park on Sunday to celebrate the auspicious day when Turner’s 93 mph fastball landed in Hathaway’s direction.

The ballpark erupted in cheers as the hockey player reached out to catch the ball barehanded. According to him, just moments ago he was warned about foul balls, especially when right-handed players took the field. Turner being a righty proved the warning to be right, just seconds after.

He told the Associated Press, that wherever one thinks it’s not going to happen, it happens, and this was just his case at Fenway Park. “I’ve been here for a few hours already. It’s my son’s birthday. We got to bring him around the stadium. It was amazing.”

According to Hathaway, one of the concession guys gave him a heads-up for right-handed players. He warned that foul balls often come in his seating direction and asked to “pay attention”. It was only when the NHLer sat down as his wife took the kids home, that a foul ball flew towards him.

Earlier during the 2022-23 season, the Washington Capitals forward was traded to the season-champion Boston Bruins. Unfortunately, both teams didn’t make it past the 2023 Stanley Cup run. The Capitals were out of the race even before it started, and the Bruins got buried by Panthers in Round 1.

Garnet Hathaway further stated that he caught a foul ball, “five, six years ago” back at the Yankees stadium when the NY Yankees were facing Red Sox. The NHL forward could very well be a free agent this summer, as the Bruins may deal with him in their cash-strapped situation.

Just a few weeks ago, Hathaway was victim to a brutal cross-checking incident by Matthew Tkachuk in Game 4. Although Tkachuk heard from NHL, the hit was lethal, traumatizing the fans in the arena. The Stanley Cup race is very well-known for its high intensity and this year it seemed to have bared its fang earlier on in the race.

In Sunday’s game at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in a devastating 1-9 record. Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar’s 3 hits boosted the team’s record for winning the series.
