“Lot of great memories” – Goalie Ryan Miller to have No. 30 retired by Buffalo Sabres next season
Ryan Miller
Top goaltender Ryan Miller will have his No. 30 retired by the Buffalo Sabres next National Hockey League (NHL) season. The 41-year-old, who has played 11 seasons with the Sabres, retired from the sport after playing for the Anaheim Ducks last year.
Miller was in Buffalo on Friday, when this announcement was made on the big screen at KeyBank Center by legendary Sabres announcer Rick Jeanneret. The Michigan native, who helped his side to back-to-back appearances in the Eastern Conference Final in 2006 and 2007, won the Vezina Trophy in 2010, and his 284 wins are the most in Buffalo history.
“I always feel like this is where I kind of grew up,” Miller said on Thursday after he was announced as part of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2022, as quoted by NHL.com. “I went to college in my hometown (East Lansing, Michigan), and then this was my chance to kind of step out on my own and also this was my first professional step. So a lot of firsts for me here and there’s a great part of my career and a lot of great memories.”
“Playing hockey with Buffalo was a dream come true”
The 41-year-old was selected by the Sabres in the fifth round (No. 138) of the 1999 NHL Draft. He was 284-186-56 with one tie in 11 seasons there and is its leader in wins and is second in shutouts with 28, behind Dominik Hasek (55).
“I’ve always appreciated my experience here as a member of the community,” Miller told the Sabres website. “Coming here and playing hockey was a dream come true. Playing with a great NHL organization and building something with a great group of guys. But then to also feel at home in the city was important to me and to make myself a member of the community where I could give back in different ways.”
