“It’s unbelievable” – Hosts Finland outlasts Canada 4-3 in OT for the World Hockey Championship title
Finland wins over Canada for its fourth world title
On Sunday Sakari Manninen scored a power-play at 6 minutes, 42 seconds on a 3-3 overtime and beat Canada at 4-3 goal in the finals to clear their path to their fourth World Hockey Championship title. After winning in China in February, Finland completed an Olympics-world double, joining Sweden in 2006 as the only country to win the Olympic and the world titles in the same year.
Finnish coach Jukka Jalonen commented, “It’s unbelievable”. “You can’t even understand what has happened. Maybe in the summer, we can figure out what really happened. But three months and two gold medals — it’s unbelievable!” Senators defenceman Thomas Chabot set up the winning power-play with 4-3 on advantage, Manninen scored a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Predators center Mikael Granlund.
“It was crazy” – Finland wins over Canada and advances to their fourth world championship title
Ottawa Senators defenceman, Thomas Chabot said, “I think it’s pretty obvious that the guy threw himself, but at the end of the day, my stick was in there and I put myself in that position, so it’s a hockey call and things happen quick(ly)”. “But I think everyone can agree that it was a bit of a dive, I think.”
While on the other hand it was noted on canadanewsmedia.ca, Canadien center Pierre-Luc Dubois stated, “You work so hard and for it to be decided like that, it sucks. We know when we come into these tournaments, it’s different rules, but that’s not the point. It’s frustrating. You don’t even know the rulebook anymore.”
Finland won over Canada in 2019 in Slovakia, whereas Canada topped the Finns last year in Latvia. During this game, Granlund scored twice, and Canadiens forward Joel Armia added a goal for Finland, whereas Jussi Olkinuora made 19 saves. Granlund commented, “It was crazy”. “It was great! What an ending to the game. They tied it up in the third period, but we found a way in the end and this is just awesome.”
All the dots connected at the end and Finland scored the path toward its world title for the fourth time. The Golden Knights defenceman Whitecloud pulled Canada within 1 with 2:12 remaining and Comtois tied it with 1:24 to go. Canada forward Cole Sillinger said, “It’s the fight in our team”. “We never give up. We pushed them ’til the end, and it’s unfortunate that there was another penalty in overtime and they capitalized. They played a great hockey game and congratulations to them.”
