The Pittsburgh Penguins who currently face the danger of missing out from the Stanley Cup playoffs, went up against the New York Rangers on Monday where things got a bit spicy between goaltender Igor Shesterkin and Sidney Crosby. The Pens captain has had several run-ins in the past against Rangers players in Madison Square Garden.

This time he got tangled in a moment with the opposition goalie. The incident took place in the second period of the game. As the Pens lead the game 2-0, Shesterkin came out to play the puck. Crosby would end up running into him behind the net leading to the goalie cross-checking the forward into the boards and shoving him away. However, no penalty was called for this action.

Meanwhile, Sidney Crosby just skated away from the scene and choose not to have a go at him. In an interview after the game, the 36-year-old NHLer jokingly claimed Shesterkin was perhaps trying to “help and maybe create a little emotion“.

I think he's just trying to get himself in the game. Obviously, we had the lead and he didn't see a lot of shots in the second. We didn't get a lot. So, I think he was just trying to help and maybe create a little emotion, too... I've had a few run-ins with goalies in this building before, so tried to learn from that a little bit, and just try to worry about playing.
Sidney Crosby said as per Jonny Lazarus of Daily Faceoff.

Crosby who had already scored once before this little run-in with Shesterkin, would score an empty net goal in the dying moments of the game to make it 5-2 for the Penguins. This win has kept their playoffs chances alive.

Sidney Crosby ties Wayne Gretzky’s incredible record

When it comes to NHL records, one can find the name of, “The Great One“, Wayne Gretzky in almost every list. Sidney Crosby has now tied him on another incredible record. With two goals and one assist against the Rangers, the Penguins star took his points tally of the season to 82 (37 goals and 45 assists).

The three points on Monday saw him clinch his 19th season where he averages at least a point per game. He is now just the second player in NHL history to achieve this feat.

After the game, he would label this as a “cool” moment and admitted that it was something he knew he was getting closer to.

That's cool. Obviously (the record) something that I didn't want to talk about. I knew was getting closer, and anytime you can be in that company, it's pretty cool.
Sidney Crosby said.

Apart from this, Crosby is also reaching to another historic record. His assist to Bryan Rust in this game was his 997th in the league. He needs three more to become just the 14th player in history to have 1,000 assists in NHL.

His main attention for now is likely going to be the playoff spots though. The Penguins are now five points their rivals, Washington Capitals, and are hoping to avoid missing the knockout stages for a second season running.
