Injuries are the most common part of any particular sport. Every professional player who takes to the field hopes to avoid getting injured and sidelined. However, it is inevitable that someday a person will have to sit out away from the sports due to injuries. This has been the story of Colorado Avalanche’s captain Gabriel Landeskog who missed the entire 2022-23 season. On Tuesday, the team announced that he will also miss the whole of next season. Questions have now arisen about whether Landeskog will call it a day after this season.

The 30-year-old forward is set to undergo a cartilage transplant in his right knee on Wednesday. As a result of this, he is set to sit out from the entire 2023-24 season. This injury was the reason why he missed the current season. It was earlier expected that he will be fit enough to take part in the play-offs. His condition did not show any positive results and hence will not join up with the team in the latter stages.

With this latest announcement, Landeskog will now not take to the ice field for two years. His last appearance for the Colorado-based side came during the 2022 Stanley Cup Final. In the final, the Avalanches defeated the two-time defending champions Tampa Bay Lightning. It was revealed later that he was playing through the pain barrier in the final.

Speaking on retirement, the Avalanches captain was quick to shut down any rumours circulating. “I have not contemplated retirement at all. It’s just been a matter of finding the best path forward for me,” he informed. He would later recall the night of the final when the Avalanches won the Stanley Cup and he hopes for more such nights in the future.

Missing a player of Gabriel Landeskog‘s ability was a major blow for the Avalanches. They were eliminated in the First round of the best-of-seven series by the hands of Seattle Kraken. In a back-and-forth series it was the Seattle-based side that hold their nerve in the end to emerge victorious by winning 4-3.

In his career, Landeskog has made over 738 appearances at the ice field. He has also made 68 play-offs appearances, all with the Avalanches. In his side’s 2022 triumph, he amazed 22 points in 20 games. Speaking of his regular season career, he has scored 248 goals and picked up 571 points.
