The hot-paced action of the NHL continued on Thursday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs locked horns with their rivals, the Boston Bruins for a second time this week. Things got heated once again between this two fierce rivals as Jake McCabe landed back-to-back heavy hits on Brad Marchand and Jake Debrusk.
Having lost Monday’s game by a 4-1 scoreline at the TD Garden, the Leafs took to the field at the Scotiabank Arena to firmly avenge this huge loss. As seen in previous games between this two teams, several fights broke out with players exchanging some words with each other.
This cross-checking incident took place in early in the first period. With more than 16 minutes left to play in the first period and the game still scoreless, McCabe got into a tangle with Debrusk and Marchand.
The 30-year-old defenseman first took out Debrusk by putting his hands on his (Debrusk) throats. This led to the Bruins’ star falling down on the ice and leading to a delayed penalty.
Moments later, McCabe would land a hit on Marchand and shoved the Bruins’ captain down on the ground. This instigated a brawl between players as Debrusk got up and went right after McCabe for his actions. Check out a video from X regarding it below:
Following the end of this fight, the Leafs were down to three men as McCabe and rookie Matthew Knies were both handed penalties for their action in the game. Moments later, the Bruins took advantage of his situation and scored to make it 1-0.
Prior to the goal Marchand was seen having a go at Mitch Marner. While the two did not get into direct contact, the Bruins forward was not thrilled with the cross-checking by McCabe and angrily reacted to it, leading to the officials to drag him away.
Bruins knock down Leafs 4-1 for second time in one week
Losing a game to an opponent with a heavy scoreline could be demoralizing but losing twice to the same opponent with the same scoreline in the same week could be very hard. That’s what the Maple Leafs felt as for the second time this week, they lost 4-1 to the Bruins.
Goals from David Pastrnak, Trent Frederic, Morgan Geekie and Brandon Carlo handed the Boston side two important points and another win over their division rivals. The game though once again saw several action and drama as tensions boiled over later on.
In the second period, Tyler Bertuzzi would drop his gloves and have a go at it with Parker Wotherspoon. The two stars exchanged heavy blows as they took out their frustration on each other.
This win though saw the Bruins complete a 6-0-0 season sweep of the Leafs for the first time since the 2011-12 season. As things stand in the division table, the two sides could meet each other in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Speaking on it, Marchand said, “It means nothing. Once playoff time starts, it’s a whole new season” and seemingly warned his team of the danger that can happen in the playoffs. If the Leafs do end up facing the Bruins, they will need a much better performance than this to advance to the next rounds.
